As some of you know, I am HOH, and have high frequency loss.

I had an analogue aid dispensed in 98 and have not used it since 01 because of a very irritating audible "shushing" noise which is in my range.

Well, today I went back for a new test with a view to getting digi aids.

Perhaps I was expecting too much, but I came away thoroughly disappointed.

My audiograms were compiled by someone who did not look at me at all when speaking to me - I need to lipread - which wasn't helped by the set-up, where I was not facing the technician.

When she had finished, I was told that my HF loss was now in fact high and medium loss - it has got a lot worse in 7 years. OK, I accept that my hearing will only deteriorate.

What I didn't expect was to be told that I would not be fitted with an aid for my worst ear (the right) because the digi aid - even the high power one she specified could not cover the highest losses. So I would be fitted with one in my slightly better ear that would better cover the spectrum.

Worse, these high power aids come without a volume control or a two mic system where you can cut out background noise - ideal for me as that is when I have the most difficulty - in a sports hall with echo or a crowded room or pub or even hearing my kids in the back of the car.

I was even informed there would be no guarantees that the new aid would not make a background "operational" noise.

The final insult came when I asked about help with my tinnitus, and she could not point me to any.

Basically I came away having been told that the new aid may well offer me no advantages over the old one, and that she could offer no guarantees about whether my hearing would be boosted by the digi aid.

HELP!

Can anybody offer any suggestions about where I can go from here?

I am certainly not feeling sorry for myself, but I am disappointed.

Is this justified, or am I asking too much of current technology?

The thing that really F's me off about Tinnitus is that it is so perverse!

I cannot hear HF noises at all, but I can hear this s*dding whine in my head most days!

I know it is coming from within my skull, because if it were external, I just wouldn't clock it!

Bummer....

Go back to your GP and get a referral appointment at,

The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital
330 Gray's Inn Road,
London WC1X 8DA

(quite easy to get to, it's near King Cross underground train)

The problem with the audiologists in the NHS hospital, they are not professional because they are mainly students being moved around to difference department so don't get any understanding experience as hearing aid department is a low priority as it's underfunded, not their fault though. I can assure you the reason you are dissapointed with the hearing aids because they are not programme correctly as you have to be fully trained in which local hospital are not gear up to it.

The RNT&E Hospital are the professional for hearing loss as they specialise in hearing loss. They will be spend all day with you to make sure you are happy with the set up although some sounds may fell strange for a while and they let you go outside and face the world then come back for your feedback. Local hospital don't do this, all they do stick a hearing aid in and say "can you hear me?" well yes but erm "Oh good, goodbye!"

ps: if you have hearing loss both ears, you should have 2 hearing aids and this may be the reason why you can't cope with them yet. If this hospital is too far, is there RNT&E hospital near you?

Yes I do but I learnt to switch off, not easy though. At the moment I'm getting a low bass humming noise which hasn't got to me yet!

I've got it too. Caused by (and this is no joke!) having a cold, which blocked my ears, driving to Dover (you know that steep hill going down just before you enter Dover?) having to brake sharply and bingo: tinnitus caused by 'trauma'

So it's not always loud noise that can cause this (and at times it's blo*dy annoying!)

No, Pip. My deafness is caused by prematurity, not damage.

mas - what are my chances of getting a referral if I live in the grim north?

Thanks everyone for suggestions so far.

Your GP should have a lists where the nearest RNT&E Hospitals.

A lot depends how good your GP is but first ring Defeating deafness , they are very helpful.
