I'm a noob at this but I'm trying.

I'm trying to get a hearth ready for a wood burner, the old back boiler is long gone and the guy is coming to fit the stove next month.

I need to lay a concrete base 500mm thick and at least a foot wide.

I have a feeling I should construct a box, but no idea what mix to use, as I don't want it sloppy and over my living room, I hear that a mix like postcrete may be best. my 2 year old would love this. Also I need to render the fireplace and unsure of the mix for this too.

Any advice you guys can give me would be brilliant.

Thanks

500mm is a bit thick mate (18inches) What ever you do put lime in it. Lime helps with movement due to heat/cold
The render is usually lime based as well for the reason stated already.
The concrete needs to be 5:1:1 ballast:cement:lime
Render depends on how thick you need to do it.

Thanks for your help Tony, You're right its 50 mil not 500.

Can you put this in dryish? or are there measures you can take to stop it going everywhere? It is a small stove (5kw) so it doesn't kick out too much heat.

The render is normal wall plaster thickness
