can anyone tell me if the main heat exchanger is held onto the pipes on a vailliant turbomax pro 28e just with the spring clips

Removal or replacement of a main heat exchanger should only be done by a gas registered engineer.

What about a DHW heat exchanger?

The secondry HE is only a water/water component and anyone can work on them as long as they feel compentent to ensure that they will not cause any leaks.
