Hi, this is my first ever post, complete novice, so please bear with me.

A neighbour of mine has one of the above boilers and it hasn't been working properly for a while and I have only found out about it today, its a long story, she's been in and out of hospital.

I took a look at the boiler which seems as though it wants to fire up, but only for a second or two, then it shuts off again. The bar pressure was over 3, all radiators full of water, no air.

I bled about 2 to 3 pints of water from the radiators, the pressure went down to just under 2 bar. I switched the boiler on, it fired up as it should do and got the whoosh of the burners igniting, so I thought I'd sorted it, but as it started up, the pressure needle shot right round to 4!!! Literally within 2 seconds, so I switched it off again and the needle dropped back, but to about 2.5 bar.

It had a new pcb board in it about 18 months ago, don't think it could be that though.

Any ideas guys??

Thanks,

Tom.

As a quicky, before the experts reply, you may be looking at expansion vessel issues. It either needs re-pressurising or replacing.

But wait till the experts come on for more accurate advice.

Yes, its likely to be the expansion vessel. See the FAQ on how to represurise.

But generally I do not advise working on any other boiler except your own!

You are not insured for any damage or injury whch you may accidentally cause! Furthermore if you run into difficulties there becomes the problem of who should pay for professional help!

Bit more than a faulty expansion vessel, best to call a registered gas safe operative, the pressure relief valve should release at 3 bar, and always check their registration and quailifactions on their Id card.

Thanks so much guys, it's really appreciated. I'm not really into all the boiler / plumbing thing. I've just had a thought though, is it possible that someone else, or the householder themselves have left the water inlet tap switched open, so as soon as I have released the pressure, when the boiler has been switched on and kicks in, the pressure has shot up again??? Unfortunately, the neighbour has suffered mental illness, and is really reluctant to let strangers into the property. There is only our family who she will deal wit,, hence the difficulty. I'll have to speak to one of the care workers if the above is not the case as I have described, thanks again for your help in the matter. If it could be that someone has left the inflow tap open, could you please let me know before I go down the route of social services, as this will cause unnecessary stress to our resident.

Best regards,

Tom.

Check the fill loop, but it doesn't sound to me like that's the problem, I understand it's a difficult issue, but it may be better if you find a reputable technition in the area and be around whilst he/she looks at the problem. It may be in the long run the quickest way to resolve the problem. Explain as you have here the symptoms and am sure it will be quickly resolved
