Heat pump installation costs

"I want a heat pump because gas is so expensive now!"

I Hear it every fookin day!:notworthy:
Now where did I say that? You should have a word with some of your pals, a lot of them are selling heat pumps with claims of lower heating bills.

I’m willing to pay more for a system if it works, and I expect similar yearly heating costs. I’ve already had some provisional quotes, with a full quote to arrive tomorrow. None asked about the pipework under the screed, including the chap providing a quote tomorrow. If I’d done as you suggested, I’d either end up paying for a system that didn’t work, or wasting £250 for a Heat Geek survey only to find I need a completely new radiator and pipe system, with the disruption that entails. Plus useful space gets taken up by a hot water cylinder.

I don't see why any installer couldn't [or shouldn't] explain a breakdown of costs and why that is considered to be too intrusive.

To try and answer this question from a homeowner perspective- installation of unit/base, drilling through for primary pipework. Insulation of external pipework. Removal of old gas boiler. Installation of anti freeze valves, filters. Electrical work. Conversion of CH system/installation of cylinder. Cylinder install and conversation to pressurised system alone took one plumber a week to do in our house.

Radiator changes and pipework alterations. Controls and commissioning is a big part of it . Balancing the system. Most installers perhaps wouldn't bother with proper balancing but that really needs someone to come back on a a cold day when running continuously.

My impression from seeing what needs doing first hand, and finishing some of the install myself, is that 2 plumbers taking a full week to do an install would be pretty good going, to do it properly. Maybe 1 day to return and do proper balancing as said and tweak settings. £350 to £400 per day for each. So conservatively £4000? Add on top the survey time and costs, other associated expenses such as MCS administration. Contingencies. I don't think 6k is unreasonable at all for an average install. It was quite a big job.
