Heating comes on randomly and ignores the time periods set on the thermostat

Hi all

We live in a rented flat with a Vaillant ecoTEC Plus 824 boiler and a Vaillant VRT350 (I think) Thermostat. Now it's getting colder we've been trying to put the heating on but the problem is that the boiler seems to be turning the radiators on randomly. Can somebody help check our settings, as we're not sure what we're doing wrong? We don't want to end up with a massive energy bill.

Thermostat

Desired temperatures

Day: 20C

Night set-back: 10C

Time programmes

Monday - Sunday

Period 1: 08:10 - 09:40

Period 2: 20:30 - 22:00

Mode is set to Auto

Boiler
Hot water is set to 60C
Radiator dial set to 35C

The heating came on correctly this morning in line with the Period 1 slot, but then after 9:40 has kept coming on and off randomly. The same thing happened yesterday. It's almost as if the thermostat is trying to keep the heating on to stay at the "Day" temperature even though it's outside of a heating Period. Is this the expected behaviour? From reading the manual it looks like the heating isn't meant to be on outside of a Period, unless the temperature drops below the 'Night set-back' temp which I really doubt is happening in the middle of the day.

This is our first winter using a new thermostat that our landlord installed, so we didn't have this issue last year. We've all not long left university so we're also completely new to this - apologies if we're missing something super obvious.

Have emailed Vaillant in the meantime but have yet to hear anything back.

Cheers

Is the pre/heat comfort on for hot water?
