We want to put a small electric heater in a downstairs cloakroom. There is a power socket just outside. Can we put in a wall mounted heater (or towel rail) and run the cable through the wall to the socket and plug it in or does it have to be hardwired? There is a sink and a loo in the cloakroom, no shower or anything like that.

It would be preferable to hardwire it, or provide a socket in the room itself (as long as its not liable to be splashed or peed on)

If its being mounted behind this socket on the wall, then take a spur from the socket and mount the FCU behind it. Simples. :p

A simple spur is not notifiable IIRC.

Thanks Steve, that is great news. We might even get it sorted before Christmas now!

A neater job may be possible.
If the circuit is a ring already and the existing cables are long enough, would be to split the two wires in the existing socket, take one to the new socket, leaving one in the existing and fit new link between the two.

The new socket or FCU is superior on the ring to spurring, especially as the wires are already there.
A dry lining box may be suitable, carefull not to cut through the wires, and keeping the wiring in the safe zones.

Then again nothing stopping you putting a 10mm hole through the plasterboards and just refitting the plugtop, not very proffesional though.
Just be carefull not to hit the wires within the wall.
