Firstly you need to check that the external controls are supply 240V to the boiler live terminal.

power seems to be ok. the thermostat is also being noisy as usual. normally the gas should ignite but it doesnt. there is a copper wire which the landlord advised to fiddle bout with which attaches from a device attached to the boiler into the boiler itself. but im reluctant to touch.

It sounds as if you have a dodgy landlord.

Do you have a gas safety certificate?

He is required by law to have gas safety checks carried out every year!

Sounds like he is asking you to fiddle with the thermocouple.

Don't bother. Call the landlord and ask to see the current copy of the Landlord's certificate which you should have a copy of anyway.
