Hello everyone,

I've recently had central heating installed and things don't seem quite right. Basically one rad keeps going off for say half hour to an hour and none of them seem to respond to the TRV's, they're either off or blazing.

I'll have all the TRV's fully open and the room stat upto 30 but this one rad will still go cold after a while.

Also the boiler seems to stop start all the time even when the timer is on constant.

Any help gladly received.
H.

Try getting the installer back, it sounds as though he didn't finish the commissioning.

It hasn't been comissioned yet as the plumber that installed it wasn't qualified to do it and I'm still waiting for someone to come and do it.

I'll give it another week then call someone else in to do it.

why did you waste your money getting an unqualified person to fit your heating? you say it hasnt been commissioned but you are using it, how do you know it is safe to use as opposed to not working quite correctly, an appliance MUST NOT be used unless it has been commissioned and confirmed as safe, so what did your installer actually check to leave the system running, unless i'm reading the post wrongly (always possible) you are off your head using it until a RGI has confirmed it as safe

Hi all,

OK, firstly, the "plumber" obviously hasn't installed it correctly  Secondly, what guarantees will you get when the RGI comes and puts his mark of zorro on the paperwork? He will more than likely just do a couple of checks and fill out your warranty and register the boiler with the manufacturer.

Plumbers are not gas engineers, some don't have the qualifications or knowledge to complete a correct install. In the future, I suggest you ask for his GasSafeRegister Card before he even steps across your thresshold

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.....

This is amazing!

You allow an unqualified person to install a gas boiler in your house which he is unable to commission! Thats illegal and it seems that you knew this when you employed him.

You should be reporting him to the Gas Safe register and certainly not paying him anything when he has been doing illegal work and putting your life at risk quite apart from the fact that its not working properly.

Why did you do it? Was it just because you wanted a cheap job?

Be aware that ONLY the installer can certify the installation as correctly installed and notify the installation to Building Control.

Tony

Sorry it's not gas, it's oil and I know it should've been done but the bloke who was supposed to commision it got taken to hospital.

Is it still unsafe to use as it's oil?

yes it is still unsafe, any fossil burning appliance can produce CO if not installed properly, please think carefully before you put your family at risk by using this, it is that serious, yes it will probably be ok, but how anyone can risk the most precious thing to them (family) to save a few quid is mental

OK thanks, got me worried now. Will stop using it until it's comissioned.

He didn't say anything about CO and said the commisioning just involved tweaking a few things to run it 100% efficiently.

How much will it cost to get it done? (money is not a problem - and I wasn't being tight, I was just told it was no big deal)

Feel a bit stupid now.

ASSUMPTION the mother of all evil.
new boiler new heating sys burner matched to boiler cannot really see a major prob most plumbers are perfectly capable of fitting an oil boiler, most gas fitters on the other hand, well the previous posters have proved what a self rightous and open minded bunch of individuals they are  .
yes your boiler needs setting up probably nothing major just a few minor tweeks,in an ideal world sooner rather than later.

So I can't just ring someone out of the phonebook to come and do it?
What can I do then?

Ta.

from your description you need to get a heating engineer to look at the system. Have a ring round and i'm sure your'll find an oil engineer willing to check the boiler is set up and burning correctly. They are not as pompus and self righteous as gas engineers.
