Hi Hanks for the reply. Ideally I would like to replace the programmer with another internal one but I do have a blanking plate for it. Could you recommend an external programmer that would work?

Thanks for the recommendation. I did a bit of searching and found it for £38.27 on Plumit. ( https://tinyurl.com/y377jq37 ). I guess this is a 4 wire unit in which case I presume I use N,L,3,4 connections on the wallplate and ignore 1 & 2. Can you buy the 4 pin plug to connect to the socket on the PCB? I did a quick search but couldn't find it.

just use 4 core cable from the new unit to the boiler, and cut the cable connected to the existing programmer and use terminal strip to join them and keep the existing cable and connection on the boiler PCB

Yes you buy a strip of 10 with m&f connections.
Make sure the pin size is correct.

I would just cut the plug off and join the wires.

Did you find a 3 time slot timer? How did you fix this?

Maybe use an external programmer and just leave existing in?
