Hi there,

I have recently purcahsed a ceiling light for my living room. On removal of the previous fixing it looks like the ceiling is just plasterboard.

Is there anyway i can reinforce the pasterboard so that it is strong enough to hold me new light fixing (about 3kgs). I live in a ground floor flat so going in from above isn't an option for me.

Any ideas?

Remove the existing fitting and see how it's fixed. It may be fitted to a wooden joist or metal framework.

If it isn't, it may have been fixed with plasterboard fixings or similar - which may not be substantial enough to support your fitting.

Poke a screwdriver or something through the hole in the plasterboard, you may find something substantial to fix to. You may have to make the hole a bit bigger, and be careful not to damage the cables.

You may find a joist or metal beam futher away, if you don't mind the fitting being off centre.

You could also find out what is above the plasterboard ceiling - is it concrete; or is it the floor void of the flat above.
