Heavy roller stipple at edges

Hi All,

I have a specific question that causes me problems both painting a wall and when attempting touch ups. The edges of the rolled areas carry much more stipple than the ‘inner’ rolled area.

I understand that this may be offset by cutting in wider when doing a wall and in the attached example the cut in was much too narrow and left the roller barely overlapping, however, it seems to be a big issue for touching areas up, as you get this light border around the area. Haven’t seen this asked about in any forums so I thought I’d see if anyone has any ways to minimise it (feathering doesn’t seem to help all that much).

The attached example shows a cut in, then the edge of the rolled area, then part of the actual rolled area, which has a lot less stipple.

Paints is a bit thick causing that stipple. Is that on purpose? Paint is normally smooth surface.

Yeah, it’s had a few coats as had to be redone due to damage, unfortunately. Wasn’t worth sanding the whole wall down. Always seem to get stipple at the edges of any areas I paint though - touch ups are a good example. They will be fine in the middle area but the edges are rough and then show as darker or lighter (depending on the light source and direction) than the rest of the wall.

Brushing edges crushers paint pigment sometimes. Cheap paint normally.

Low tac masking down the sides and roll to edges is the the only way to help prevent it

It’s Dulux Trade Matte Vinyl paint so not a particularly cheap one. It is a cheap roller head though. Either way, the tac is a good idea as long as it doesn’t mark the wall. Thanks!
