Heeeeelp, lighting...

Hi.

Please see pic, if it has attached properly.

Just looking at my new lights, as I was going to stick them up before I paint the ceiling.

Now as I understand it I should have a live, neutral and earth. This fitting seems not to have the earth. Is this right? Is the earth only supposed to go through the fitting?

Secondly, the old lights I have up have the round fitting to the ceiling so I assume it has the round plastic bit where the wires go into.

So as my new light would not sit on this, do I just change to choc blocks and push into the ceiling?

Cheers!!....

Just bring the earth into the lamp and sleeve it with green/yellow sleeving or G/Y tape.

Essentially yes. I usually sleeve it (fully - no bare end) and fold it back.

Use this

I see, but would this have to be surface mounted?

No, you can carefully push it into the ceiling void after wiring.

Right, I see. must be smaller than the pic makes it look. So from that image i see the earth simply loops through the electrical fitting rather than to the lamp itself?...

Yes, the existing earth (at the ceiling rose) will connect to the earth terminal in the new junction box. Then it will (along with neutral & switched live) go to the new lamp but the earth will just be sleeved and folded back within the lamp.

Is there space inside the lamps to replace those two single terminal blocks with a four way block ?

If so then use a four way block.

[1] the two browns from the lamp and the black with red sleeve ( switched live )

[2] the three reds ( live loop in and loop out and live to switch )

[3] the two blues from the lamp and the two blacks ( neutral loop in and loop out and neutral to lamps)

[4] earths

Well, space in the new lamp unit is tight even for the original blocks. As it is, for various positioning reasons I have fitting two of these in the room, I will have to modify one of them. But the standard blocks are very high where the screws tighten, so it may work to change them...

OK, That helps loads!

Do you think http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/204979 will do the job as well, just that Wickes is just round the corner, save me waiting on the other.

That junction box will prove difficult to terminate the cables. Have a look at this link.

Also have a look at the various methods on this link - look at the chock-box
