My father had a PhD in electrical engineering but when a boy it amused me that he had to call someone to repair the TV !
His answer of course was that the repair guy did this all day and would repair it quickly and cheaply!

One of the most fabulous things about becoming an engineer was the opportunity to work and study at some of the country's finest Universities......Imperial London and Queens Belfast for me.
The facilities and knowledge on hand was incredible.
As for it all being applicable is debatable but that can be said for most educational study.
