Hello All

I'm fairly new to DIY but I like a challenge, and so does my dad whos alot better at it than me we also have a friend of the family who runs his own plumbing company, he knows alot of people in the trade like a good kitchen fitter who we have used before.

So ive bought this old 1940's house http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-28651026.html which has been very badly reglected over the years.

I had a full building survey done on it only major concerns where that there was a slight woodworm infestation and he said maybe the roof needed replacing. (I had someone from a local roofing firm take a look and he said there is nothing wrong with the roof!)

Anyway my first question is that I need to start thinking about where the electrical sockets are going to on (whole house needs re-wiring).

I think putting 4, 2-way sockets in each room should do it.
Im not sure if im going to sign up to Sky at this point or to Virgin media I may want to watch TV in the lounge, bedrooms, and maybe even the kitchen. I know with sky you have to pay £10 extra for another box. My question is more about the wiring and wall sockets.

Do both Sky and Virgin media use Coaxial connections?
I work in IT so am also thinking about running network cable around the house. Is there a danger of having too many cables running through the walls? The house has wooden floor boards so cables will be routed underneath.

Of this house is in South Reading if anyone can recommend a good electrician pm me.

Any advice would be appreciated

Cheers

If I assume not doing the electrics yourself there is a major thing to consider before asking for quotes in order to get like for like quotes.

Number of sockets per room etc of course but also number of lights per room with CFL and LED dimmer switches cost not only for switch but also for special lights so a 1/3 and 2/3 split in lights gives you three light levels without using dimmer and 9 x 2W LED cost less than 1 x 18W LED so can save money so time to think about this is now.

The other is ring or radial and RCBO or RCD route. Since you say into IT likely RCBO radials will be best as less likely to trip due to leakage adding up but costs more.

You may have reduced options is supply is TT but clearly you have to be able to compare prices like for like.

Again cables Ali-tube or twin and earth most will go for twin and earth but you say IT and Ali-tube radiates less hash so wireless will work better. Specially with lights.

Sky don't use connectors, they run the cables direct to the room. VM use F connectors with isolation built in. You don't need to worry, they supply and fit.

I don't really want sky drilling random holes in my walls ive seen new build flats which have sky faceplates so clearly they must exist.
