HELP - Boiler keeps turning itself off & not coming back

Thanks for the tips! I have felt the pipes and the hots ones do go hot now and then but not for long, I think it must be they turn hot for a few minutes when the pilot fires up and then they cool down very fast.

Should there be a dial on the pump where I can turn it up? There doesn't seem to be on in an obvious place, at least I can't see it.

Btw, as I suspected once I turned the CH to auto and waited for it to come on this afternoon at the usual time it seems to have worked this time and the rads are good and hot. But it's so unpredicable :(

You don't mention which boiler or system layout you have, but if the pump is external to the boiler, it will usually have a small lever labelled 1, 2, 3. This controls the speed with 3 being the highest. If you have a combi the pump will be inside the boiler and should be set to maximum.

I think intermittent faults the worst
Could it still be sludge or particles bunging up somewhere occasionally
On the pump the speed switch can sometimes be round the back and call for a mirror to guide finger

hey vonpit / gcn
did you ever find the solution?
i have virtually the same problem
heating engineer says may be programmer timer...apart from sudden shut down prompted by hw switch off on timer hard to explain other symptoms of cutting out and not responding at other times when hw and ch been on
still not sure if ch honeywell motorised valve occasionally sticking...or faulty somehow - odd for the hw switch off programmer to upset? - but i figure explains why twice the ch has been stuck on - even with the programmer off afdter timer end
then there is the mystery as to why switching the isolator switch off and on usually brings back responsiveness
hard to explain thats for sure
dont really want to waste time, money and effort replacing timer and powerhead just to see if that cures it
intrigued reading thread again how gcn says an internal part had failed - is that something perhaps in the boiler
we did have a pcb board replaced about a year ago after it blew...
could there be another problem or some compatibility issue i wonder?
again thanks to anyone who can help
and hope this directs homeowners and experts to fault fixing perfection!!!

Don't think it's the sludge blocking because although it's unpredictable in some ways there is a pattern e.g. the way the pilot comes on and off all the time. I just checked the thermostat and turned it up to 24 from 21 - shouldn't the pilot ignite again and stay on until the next heat level has been reached? If it is meant to then it hasn't done that. If the pilot isn't reading the signal from the thermostat where would that problem lie?

Thanks for reading - would love to know what's going on but feel better for getting it off my chest. May have to call around some plumbers tomorrow to sound them out :(

Btw, no hot water this evening either :( :(
