Help: Dealing with "hovering" chimney stacks!

Hi all,
A survey in a house I am interested in, states that the chimney breasts have all been removed, leaving the part from the attic upwards, just hovering there and in need of support.

The vendor cheerily thinks the problem can be sorted by Gallows Brackets (not sure about this, 1935 house) ans has reduced the £ by £1500....

Is 1500 really enough to sort this out and get the BR Certificate?!

I dont want to screw them, although I am paying pretty much what they want for it.

BUT - as a rough estimate how much does gallows installation or better still an RSJ or Lintel installation in an attic cost, in the Greater London area? This is to help me see if the house is worth pursuing.

Pretty simple job to resolve and a gallow's bracket is the way to do it. Its an easy enough DIY job and £1500 is an exceedingly good offer!
The only difficult part which requires 2 pairs of hands is the offering up of the gallows bracket to mark the position for the holes, and a good quality sds drill, not that its that difficult to drill the rawbolt fixings.

Do a web search on gallows brackets for chimney breast removal or you could wait a while and someone may be along to offer a specific web site!

Thank You guys, I have spoken to the local BRC people (BRENT COUNCIL) - REALLY helpful.

Basic advice seems to be that I get a builder in to make an assessment. The builder's assessment of what needs to be done is submitted to the Council via a REGULARISATION APPLICATION which their bods will OK or adjust.

Completing the requirements will result in a certificate.

I only wish I had the ££ to rebuild the chimnies back up and make them fully functional. It might be a nice backup in this day of high fuel costs....

Any idea how much it might cost to rebuild chimnies??

Unfortunatly the rebuilt chimneys will be different from the original, due to changes since the original construction.

Understood - hopefully for the better. I could allways make the outside look the same?

Any idea of the cost of doing this?
