Hi,
We have a problem with a floating hard wood floor. It was recently fitted with an expansion gap of 10mm all way round, however the floor seems to have expanded causing to floor to lift in areas. The wood was acclimatized int the house for about a month. The floor was sealed and a damp proof membrane was placed underneath. We do not have damp so could any one help us and give us a clue what the problem is an how to rectify it.

Thank you Razil

The room size is about 4 x 3.5 metres.

We have the hall way to finish but we dont want to start it until we sort this problem. It will be attached on to the living room floor via the door.

Thanks Razil

Recently the air humidity has gone up from around 45% up to 75 - 80%.
That could have caused the lifting of your floor. How 'bad' is it?

The was a huge lump under the sofa but we have managed to release it and its gone down but still touching the wall on one side with 2 small ripples now. Should we try to cut the wood near the wall to flatten it. The skirting boards will go over the top after it.

Thanks

Rule of thumb with solid wood and expansion gaps: 3mm per meter wide, minimum 10mm.
In your case an expansion gap of 13 - 15mm would have been a safer bet.
You can cut a bit of the wood off - not too much though in case it shrinks back again. Skirtings should be 18 - 21mm thick.

thank you for your help.
If we do this will the wood settle flat again or is it possible that this problem could re occur.

The wood will settle. Depending on the air-humidity and your standard house-climate it won't easily happen again (or you have to have 'accidents' or floods).

Keep an eye on the air-humidity for a while.

Thank you for replying hopefully we can sort it now.
