Hi, I have bought a gold ceiling light fitting which I like but the colour is not right. The gold colour is too light for the rest of the fixtures in the room. If I spray it to a darker gold will I have to prep it first and if so how? Sorry I am useless at this sort of thing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please see the picture, thank you Keeley

Get some garnet (French) polish and try wiping that over the metal with a piece of cotton rag. That will darken the gold a bit, but it does tend towards a reddy brown tint, however it cane deepened by applying multiple coats, and it is reversible (simply wash off with meths). You can get a similar effect by using diluted spirit stains (the type designed for wood).

Please note that garnet polish and spirit stains are exact definitions of the products used and not generic terms
