Hi, I am a VERY inexperienced DIY-er and yesterday I applied a coat of gloss paint (one coat, non-drip) to a brand new (bare wood) window frame and skirting board. Today it is tacky and sticky and I just read the back of the can and it says I should have used primer/undercoat. What do I do? Will the paint dry and just not look as good as it should or will it stay tacky? I don't know how I would even start getting all the paint off to start again.... Is there anything I can do? And yes, next time I will read the instrucions on the tin first!

I take it you can't remove the majority of this paint with white spirit?

Is the window inside only?

Removing the paint could prove a tiresome task, so I would be inclined to let it harden a bit, sand down lightly but evenly. Too much sanding could cut through the paint and leave a sticky mess. Observe where the knots in the wood are. Treat the knots with knotting solution. Give the frame a coat of oil-based primer. Dry. Undercoat. Dry. Light sand with fine sand paper. Gloss. Hope for the best.

If after the first undercoat the surface looks patchy then use a second undercoat before glossing.

i cant see why it wouldnt dry.

wait till it drys, sand it down as much as poss and undercoat then gloss on top.
