Sounds like water pump failure

Indeed.

The heater blows cold. No hot air at all even when the engine is hot.

Classic Water Pump Sympton. Impellor has failled (spinny bit on back of water pump)

It's a Zetec engine. 16v.

Timing belt driven. So will need a timing belt done at the same time.

What is hapening is that the water in the engine is not being circulated. The coolant in the block then boils forcing the rest of the coolant out the top of the expansion tank. This also exlains the bubbling you are getting. The top hose gets hot due to convection.

I'd be almost willing to garuntee that when you pull it off the impellor part of the pump will be wither loose of corroded to death.

Right so it looks like the water pump needs replacing then. Will see how much it costs before we decide whether to get it done or not. Car isn't wort too much to be honest.

It's booked in for tuesday so will find out for sure.

The bloke reckoned the head gasket was on it's way and hinted it would not be worth our while paying to get it fixed.

Traded it in (plus a few quid obviously) for an S reg mondeo..Very clean inside and out and runs nice. Good deal I think.

There you have it. The old escort is no more. Kind of happy because I hated the bloody thing.
