Help please! no heat...

Hi. I'm really hoping someone can help me to fix my heating, as I can;t afford to get anyone in til i get paid in two weeks time
i have hot water but no heating.
I don;t know how much of this is relevant but here is what has happened with the system over the past few days:

I had to bleed the radiators last week because the heat on them was uneven.

This afternoon, I noticed the house was getting incredibly warm. I couldn't turn the heat down using the thermostat, and the thermostat isn't clicking. I had to turn the heating off entirely at the (Glowworm Micron) boiler to get the radiators to turn off. Now I have turned the heating on again, the thermostat still isn't clicking and the radiators won't come on. It isn't air locks in the radiators, i checked with the key.
The boiler is firing up for the water but not for the heating.



the cover popped up slightly off this thing in the airing cupboard (siemens motor housing ??) a few days ago and I had to push it down again to make the water go to the radiators: (last time I had the problem of no heating I had to pay Service force over a hundred quid for the priveledge of watching a man do just that! I have a mug propped between the shelf and the box to hold it down. ( this usually works). there is a thin metal lever currently pointing to manual. it refuses to be pushed to stay at OPEN. I have no idea what this means.


I replaced the 3 amp fuse in the heating wall switch and that didn't help (and yes, it is switched to the ON position )

I have never had the problem of the (siemens) thermostat not clicking before.
If I have to check the thermostat or do something to it, please explaing to me how to open it.

I can fix stuff if I am told in detail how to do it, usually. I really hope someone can put me out of this misery tonight so my children can get up in a warm house and would really appreciate advice,

It does sound as though that siemens motor thing is knackered :
It's a diverter valve motor if theres 3 pipes and zone valve motor if theres just 2 pipes going to it.
I cant guarantee its gone from here but from what you say that it worked after you wiggled it a bit is a good pointer.
If you do fancy a DIY on it heed the following advice carefully.
DO NOT REMOVE ALL THE WIRES AND TRY TO REMEMBER WHERE THEY CAME FROM!
Instead take a pic with a camera phone or whatever or at least write down what colour went where.
Snip the wires where they connect onto the block connector so you can see what colour wire went where then replace them one by one.

If you can post a pic we may be able to advise further

thanks for answering at this time of night Slugbabydotcom! ... this is the thing... two horizontal pipes split from one vertical. would that cause the thermostat to stop clicking?

That'll be because the motor in the Siemens box isn't working, or the mechanisms "($%^"($£&"*&'d


SO Either move one of the sticking out arms to get the indicator to M (Middle out of Water Middle Heating), Or remove the head altogether. Looks like the coloured tab is there for that.
WHen the valve spindle is in the mid position, you get CH and HW.
If you do that manually, whenever there's a call for the boiler to come on, both CH and HW will get warm.

If you turn the knob on the boiler DOWN (not marked, but it might be say 55º at minimum) and the thermostat on the HW cylinder UP to say 65, the boiler will stay on trying (in vain) to get the HW up to 65. Meanwhile, the rads will warm cos you opened the valve.

That'll do until you can get it sorted properly.

Heads aren'thard to change.
See if you can find a full identifier on the valve head, google it and you should find removal instructions.

thank you-- I;'m off to try to shift that lever now, and it isn;t a very expensive part to replace and what you say confirms what ive just finished reading via google, that it's quite straightforward to replace... I'm sure one of my neighbours could help with that. ( I'm not going to even attempt to snip wires!!)
