Help, used a walnut to removea scratch but left oil behind

Hi, can anyone help. I have used walnuts before to remove scratches from wooden furniture and it's worked well but just used one on my coffee table and it's left a smudge behind which I expect is the oil. Anyone advise how I can remove this without harming the table?

polish it off with a soft cotton rag (old vest)

could it be a scuff mark in the varnish?
