help! what's the best primer to use on wood-effect laminate?

Hello guys, I have some old bookcases and picture frames that I would like to give a new lease of life to. They are a cheap wood-effect laminate. I know I'll need to use a primer before I paint them, but I seem to be having some difficulty finding a good (and not wildly expensive or I'd just buy new furniture!) Primer available in the UK.

Any advice would be really appreciated. My husband is useless at DIY!!

Try Zinser 123 - the red tin is best for what you want it for, but it's not cheap. The blue tin would probably be OK and is cheaper.

I think the £20.73 must be for 1 litre as I have just paid £49 for 2.5 litres at my local stockist where I get a small discount.
