A black cable comes into a small junction box in top floor with the following colours black, green, white, orange out of this there are two white telephone cables which go to a whole load of telephone points.

I feel it is a real mess and would like to start again, is the the bt in cable?

If so how do i wire it into a bt master socket box?

thanks in advance

Dont get it! When you mean master do you mean the small box as in the link you posted?

It should go to a master socket in order for the phone(s) to ring.

if you want you can take it to a bt junction box first, but there is no pont, you still require a master socket.
