a new ceiling rose has been put up as the flex hanging done was very long so have now put a shorter one, unfortunately the wiring has got mixed up so when you turn the bedroom light switch on, the bathroom comes on, turn the landing light on, other bedroom comes on. obviously the wires have been connected wrong, how do they know which is the right place to wire them in as there are lots of blacks and reds!! thanks

Strange that you needed a new rose, simply shortening the flex length and leaving the old rose in situ would have done.

You have a loop in / loop out system- normally there would be LNE feeds in and out (so 2 cables TE) and a switch wire (1 cable TE).

Could you confirm the number of cables you have ? and then the total number of reds (L) and blacks (N).

Also look at the onsite wiki (see top tabs on page 3rd from end)- look at UK electrics, lights, wiring- that will help !

A picture would be useful.

Normal problem with DIY one of your blacks should have had a red sleeve and it should have gone to outside and connected with brown on flex and other blacks should go other side and connect with black of flex.

I have in the past tried to guide people how to use lamp to test with but never seems to work. So it's a case of finding which of the cables goes to switch and that cable will have black that should have red tape.

There are loads of diagrams on here and loads of other posts asking same question.

unfortunately the black does not have a red sleeve

You need to identify the switch wire ie the cable that goes to the switch.

Are you able to trace this?

If you have access above, or test equipment you should be able to.

You mention you only have two earth (green and yellow) wires. Three would be more usual.

Look closely, two bare earth wires may be inside one green/yellow sleeve.

Wiring of a certain age may not have earth wires throughout.
It was sometimes common practice to wire the 'feed' cables with earth; and the 'switch' cables without.

The theory was the light fittings might be metal, but the switches would always be plastic.

If, at your ceiling rose, you have a cable that really doesn't have an earth in it there is a strong possibility that this is the switch cable.

The black of a switch cable gets sleeved with a red sleeve.

Look at the ends of the black wires.

Is one of them doubled over?

That would indicate the switch wire.

You need a multi meter, cost about a tenner (much cheaper than a call out) further instructions can be given once you have one. :)
