Hello Everyone!

We are newly registered on the forum but have been using it for years so hope some of you Pro's can bless us with some more of your excellent advice!!!!!

We have exposed brick internal walls (for nearly 4 years now!!!). We were advised to PVA them to stop excessive dust (fair point) but we would like to render then skim. The house is a 1900's terrace so the walls are made up of whatever bricks they could find at the time and (assume) lime mortar joints. External walls are going to be internally lined with thermal-polybacked-plasterboard as well as two main walls where we have removed the chimney breasts and the walls have brick dust - soot - on them.
We would like to level the walls that will be lined so to give us some rendering practice - we say 'level' as the plumb is out by 15-20mm in places!
Questions are!
 Can we render with sand and cement even though the walls have been PVA'd - although the walls are still 'dusty' and absorb water readily? Or will we Have to use bonding?!?!?!?!?
 If S&C can be used should we include lime in the mix (which type as there are soo many!)
 What will be the best mix to use and would you recommend 3 coats i.e scratch, float, finish with plaster. We were thinking 4:1 then 5:1 For a general render or would a weaker mix be more appropriate?

I know these subjects have been covered before but would appreciate a specific resolution to our quieries.

Thank you
