Are there any special limitations on how long the cables from the gear to the lamp can be?

One of the cathodes usually has a restriction on the length of wires to it. The details will either be on the ballast itself or in the MI. The limit is usually in distance or capacitance.
The tridonic website is quite usefull for that sort of info.
The terminals marked * they usually recomend 0.5 or 1 meter max
