What made the pressure go high in the first place?

Probably me being a muppet trying to get the right combination from the valves. Unlike the diagram in the manual our filling loop has been connected with copper pipe rather than the removable flexible pipe the manual suggests.
Update: Problem solved, fooked gauge, would be the last thing I checked of course!
I didn't have it off personally, It was fixed by a professional who did the safety tests afterwards as they were due in a couple of weeks anyway. Not our house so I wasn't touching anything beyond the electricals and water.
