HOB CABLE

Hi.

Just had a new HOB delivered and just got the job of fitting the flex from the wall socket to the HOB. The HOB is a biggy rated at 8.8KW. An electrician fitted the new cable from the wall to the consumer unit. What size cable do I need from the wall connector to the HOB?

2) What is the rating of the MCB on the circuit?

The cable must be protected by a fuse or MCB and it's size will depend on the size of Fuse or MCB there may be a fuse in hob but that would be unusual so normally it will depend on what is in the consumer unit.

Also where there is a change of thickness in a cable it should be fused so in theory it should be same size as cable from consumer unit to cooker outlet.

I expect either 6mm or 10mm but you have not given enough info to answer at 38A for a conventional hob you would get away with 6mm on a 32A MCB however with a induction hob you would need 10mm on a 40A MCB because of the boost feature available with induction hobs.

If XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) cables are used then this changes because of the higher working temperatures and there are other factors which can change requirements cables with the exception of flex in free air do not have fixed current rating but it is matched to how they are routed and what cooling this will afford so a 6mm cable could be rated anywhere between 23.5 to 58 amps with 34 being most likely.

The manual says H05V2V2-F three core 4mm. The MCB is 40A and sorry for shouting, thought it was the way to state hob.

4mm² is going to struggle to carry the load for an 8.8kW appliance - I wonder if they are assuming cyclic loading...

Do the instructions say to use a 40A breaker?

Still - if H05V2V2-F3G4.0 is what they specify, then that's what you should use, as the terminals may not be designed to take anything larger.

Hob is a word, not an abbreviation.

It can be an abbreviation, (http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/HOB) but on here is used to mean a group of hotplates or gas burners.
