Hi everyone,

I’ve recently discovered a hole saw guide called the Hole Troll, and I’d appreciate some honest feedback from people who do woodworking, tiling, plumbing, carpentry, or anyone that frequently uses hole saws.

It’s designed to help keep hole saws steady when starting a cut, and can be used with or without a pilot bit. The concentric raised rings help maintain accuracy over existing holes where a pilot bit is obsolete, particularly on sensitive or awkward surfaces. The aim is simply to reduce wandering, improve accuracy, and make the first few seconds of cutting less stressful and reduce risk of damaging surfaces or even prevent an injury.

I’m not here to advertise, so I won’t post any links unless the moderators allow it. I’m just trying to understand whether the idea is useful and what features matter most to people who actually use hole saws.

A couple of things I’d love feedback on:
  • Does this kind of guide solve a real problem you’ve had?
  • What size range or compatibility would you expect?
  • Is there a product(s) that claim to solve the issue of enlarging existing holes with and without a pilot bit?
  • At a retail price of £20 ex VAT for a 6-pack, does it feel reasonable for what it can do?
Happy to answer questions about the design or share photos if that’s allowed. Any thoughts, positive or critical would be genuinely helpful.

Thanks.

Doesn't sound as though it will do anything an odd bit of ply drilled with the saw you're going to use will do.

Edit: having googled it I will certainly stick to my bit of ply. Seems like a joke TBH/.

Why would you not be using a hole saw with a pilot in the first place?

If drilling a porcelain tile (without a pilot), I can't see the ridged rubber/silicone product making much of a difference.

Personally, when drilling into tiles, I hot melt glue perspex to the tile after using an equally sized hole cutter. You can then snap the perspex off with out any damage to the tile.

I cannot see how the product that you are talking about will stay in place and not wander
