Hi a friend of mine pulled up her floorboards to clear out her air brick vents and when looking around found that under a section of the wall where the footings normally are there is just a hole.
Its about 300-400mm wide and seems arched and goes straight under the wall. (not sure if all the way to the outside yet, but sure looks that way) Its not like any brick work has sunk and collapsed as there is nothing but soil under it and either side there are footings. If you keep digging it goes a good few feet deep.
Can anyone thing of a reason for this? is it done on purpose. There is no structural movement above.
Also looking at this wall it seems there a wooden plank running in the wall that the joists rest on. Again is this normal?
The house is over a 100 years old.
Thanks
