Very sorry if this is the wrong forum to post such things (and I trust you'll yell at me should this be the case).

We just had a few dozen small (pin/nail) sized holes show up in a plastered wall, as if they'd been poked through from the back. After scraping off some of the surface paint/plaster, there are nearly-circular 2-5mm dark patches under most of the holes.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I can't make any sense of what this could be, and I'm reluctant to just cover it up without knowing more first.

The house is ~125yrs old, and I'm not aware of anything having been done to the wall (other than us having it painted 3yrs ago). The wall itself is one between our property and a neighbouring one in a terraced setup.
