hello folks. i need to build a retaining wall in my garden. i can buy hollow concrete blocks, or dense (solid) ones. i am getting conflicting advice. what is the theory behind the two types of blocks? the wall is no more than three courses high.

any thoughts gratefully received.

For a retaining wall, even one only 600 high as yours probably is, you need weight.
Solid blocks heavier than hollow; imo use solid.

Hollow blocks were designed to be able to use re-bar, which would also be in the foundation concrete. Ones used in the USA are thinner and lighter than ours, but the strength is in the design of the reinforcement.
