Hi can anyone advise if the new Honeywell ST9400C programmer will directly replace an old ST699B controller which I want to replce

if its the same shape probably yes. If its the square one good luck getting the front off

From a functionality perspective the ST9400C will replace an earlier ST.

However the backplate and size of the new unit is slightly different.
