They should just pot off with a screwdriver. Be careful as they always want to extend and have quite a force.

The common misconception, with gas struts, are that both are faulty....

ONLY one is broken. The other supporting twice the weight, fails. But is servicable. As it is doing a job that it isn't designed to do.
