We have just moved to a house which has a fairly old glow worm micron boiler and a small water tank in the bathroom. The boiler heats the radiators well, but seems less efficient at heating the water in the tank (still only vaguely warm after a few hours of being on the constant setting for hot water).

There is also an electric heater for the water tank, in the cupboard housing the tank. This can come on by timer, but the minimum is can be set to is 5 hours! So currently, on the timer, it comes on from 3am-8am. The issue is, the water is SCALDING hot in the morning. We have started to just boost the electric heater for 1/2 hour at a time throughout the day rather than use the timer  to avoid scalding water (have young children).

Is there any way of putting some kind of thermastat on the tank to stop the water heating up so much? In addition, our first bill for electric was astronomical- so I think the electric heater just heats the water for the full 5 hours! I cant believe there cannot be a way of reducing the 5 hours down to just 1 os 2??

If anyone can help it would really be much appreciated.
