How accurate should I expect the hot water tank stat to be, have it set at 30 degrees after finding it too hot, but water is still over 50 degrees at taps.

You need to store your water hotter than that.

Cylinder stats are fairly inaccurate, worse so the older they get.

It's a new installation, I am happy to store water at a reasonable temp, but seem to have no control over it at present.

If you want accurate hot water fit a thermostatic mixing valve off the hot water cylinder.

The HSE say that hot water should be stored at a temperature of at least 60°C. This to kill off any legionella bacteria which my be present in the water. If you live in a hard water area 60°C is also the maximum.

You will have to mix cold with hot to get a safe washing temperature (40-45°C). So put the plug in before you turn the hot tap on. Then you won't lose any cold water in the pipe.

A typical tank stat is not terribly accurate to it's marked scale temperature.

Then the hysteresis has to be taken into account.

Then there is the way it has been fitted to the cylinder. Ideally the foam removed and the stat placed fully down in the recess thus formed.

As Dan says the stats usually only protrude 100 mm into the cylinder.

Is that really the manufacturer recommended orientation ?

Horizontal cylinders are a solution to a problem and would never be a first choice!

On a vertical cylinder the stat is usually placed about a quarter of the height up the cylinder.

Horizontal cylinders heat slightly differently so you cannot make any assumptions and the maker's recommendations should be followed.

Low ceiling height ( loft) made it best option . Does seem a strange position for the stat as can't easily see it's dial without nose to the floor.

Some of them horizontal cylinders are similar to saniflow.

Just fit them as a last resort, very last resort.
