It's an old setup by the looks of it. I have to switch on immersion and it would boil the water until it sounded like the tank.was going to explode then switch it off manually. Did this for about 10 months then decided 1 day to work normally and cut out once temperature was reached then reheat ( work as it should) now wen I switch on the power there's a crackling noise with a little smoke for about a minute then nothing. Doesn't look like the standard element with the big screw in nut tht I looked in the screwfix book and thought I'd be able to sort easily. Looks more like an oval flange? I've attached a picture. Just wondered if it's still possible to buy these type of elements or do I contact my landlord and say this thing is a f×@#$ing hazard and I want a new tank with programmable switch. Forgot to say it has a feed from back boiler in coal fire. Any ideas of price for new tank/element etc? Thanks for reading.

Well, I find it a little worrying that you have put up with this for almost best part of a year now. From what you say, it sounds and appears dangerous. Start with your Landlord asap.
