hot water venting into cold water tank

can someone help , every now and againwater from my cylinder vents into cold tank , why? and what can be done?

This sounds very familiar. Have a look down this forum under "Continuing overflow problem". There are a number of possible causes:

1) You tank is boiling and steam is forcing water up the vent. Have you got near boiling water coming out of your hot taps? Probably not.

2) Your tank heating coil has ruptured and the pump is forcing water out into the tank. Does the water problem happen only when the pump is on?

3) Most likely answer. Mains pressure water is entering your hot water system. You can confirm this by turning off the mains stopcock. Now you have to find the point of entry. Check everywhere that hot and cold water mix. If this is the cause then somebody has done something stupid.
