I have a similar problem,

I have a combi boiler in a flat.

When I open the hot tap all the way, the water gets warm and then cools continually with the temp gauge on the boiler fluctuating between 27 and 33 C.

The boiler cuts out during the cooling process.

This cycle will repeat even when the CH is on (regardless of CH temp)

The flow rate is very good. I have compared this with the Mains pressure and whilst there is a slightly lower rate, I know that is to be expected.

We have B.G home care and the "engineer" recommended a boiler flush. For which they charge about £300. I am sceptical about this. It is my understanding that a boiler may need descaling if the HE has become blocked or sludged. If this were the case, should the pressure and flow rate be significantly reduced?

My original suspicion was the dhw thermister.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

he is talking about the system side of the h/e

Thanks Kevplumb,

I haven't seen his job sheet yet. I am speculating that he is referring to a powerflush of the HE for CH and DHW.

I am refering to DHW side of HE.

Just for you ChrisR, I will get boiler details shortly.

just got the job sheet and the it states replace secondary heat exchanger.

Price quoted £325.

If this is the cause, the problem is a 6 week lead time for parts.

Father in law was told by the engineer that it needed descaling.
