Hotpoint CDT00 will not switch off

We have had the above tumble dryer for 5 years with very little problem.

Tday on trying to dry a load, the machine would only work with the start button continually depressed. As soon as I let it go the machine stopped. I then turned the timer dial through 360 degrees with the start button depressed and the machine worked. However, it is permanently live and will switch back on as soon as the timer dial is turned again. The only way to re-set this is to turn on and off at the mains.

The on/off switch looks OK and I have set the thermostat.

What do I do now??!!

Door lock is poss faulty. Does it still run when the door is open.

The load stops when the door opens and on pushing the start button it starts up again when closed.
