I had to disconnect our Hotpoint washer from the water supply to repair the flooring. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn the water back on after reconnecting it and the missus put a washload on soon after. It was left running for a good few minutes before I got to it. Will doing that blow the heater element or is there some protection to stop the element from heating up if there's no water in the machine?

It will be fine, it won't start to heat up without water. If you had left it long enough it would have eventually come up with a fault code to tell you that it was not filling.

Thanks jj4091.
I know it's not a huge job to replace an element in a Hotpoint but it's the last thing I need right now.
