oh I agree when there is really a fire in the area where the sprinklers activate they are a good thing. The question is does the damage they save during fires outweigh the damage they cause during false alarms.

I've often wondered whether damage done by sprinkler activation*chance of false alarm is greater than damage done by fire*chance of fire.
Read the blurb from the makers, and somewhere you'll find a link to an industry association with more info.

They work on a room-by-room basis, and I don't think they use simple ionisation detectors that go off when you burn the toast or light up a herbal cigarette. The amount of water they use to put out a fire is tiny compared to the amount the Fire Brigade would pump in.

If I were speccing a new build I wouldn't hesitate to have one put in.
