How are they fixed in place?

We have bought some large format tiles for our kitchen which has a solid floor. In the room there is a ladder type of staircase which finishes with two legs coming down onto the kitchen floor. There is a small landing which is like a big wooden box with the last 3 steps coming down from it. We were wondering if it was possible to tile under the legs rather than around them as this would look quite messy.

What I would like to know is how stairs like this are normally fixed onto the floor, if at all? We'd rather not take them apart to tile under them and I was wondering if we could just saw a bit off the bottom!

probably not fixed to the floor, just to the wall and the header at the top.
the downside of tiling under is the tiles will most probably crack due to the movement of the stair rails on such a small area of tile.

cutting a tile is fairly easy with a disc tile cutter (cheapo ones are about £20) and a scribe

cut the slots with the disc then scribe between the cuts and snap out the unwanted bit.

You're right Kevin I didn't think about them cracking. That would be more of a disaster than some dodgy cuts! I didn't realise tile cutters were that cheap so I'll definitely look into it. Thanks!
