Sounds a bit of an odd question this, but we intend to build a sunroom onto the end of our property, to be used all year round as a general room, sofa, table sort of thing,
but we're having trouble deciding on the size it should be.

Are there any guidlines, hints or tricks? Any standard/minimum sizes?

We currently reckon it would be 3.8m wide projecting 3.5m from the end wall. Is this too small a space to use?

Sorry about the general waffly nature of this, we just can't figure out how to settle on a size before sending in planning apps.

Thanks for any tips,
Tom

if budget isn't a problem then go as big as your home will architecturally and physically allow.

the roof pitch may be the main restriction as to how far out you can go, as may the drains or geology (lie of the land) etc.

you need to establish what furniture you will be using and how the furniture will be arranged relative to the entrance and exit.

What do you mean 'Architecturally allow'? Is it a structure issue or just finding the right size visually (some sort of aesthetic constant?)

how? I'm a bit too non savvy to work that out other than the eaves of the extension surely shouldn't potrude from the front and rear faces of the house?
Thanks

precisely. you don't want to end up with a monstrosity, but with something that's both pleasing to the eye and lends itself well to the existing building. lean-to's are ok but a gable or hip will make a building more interesting.

do you live in a bungalow or a house? obviously, if a sun room is joined to a house then there are limitations to how high you could pitch a roof. i presume you have upstairs windows?

...or will the sun room be detached?

It always amuses me when people have a 'typical' conservatory, and then throw in a few chairs and/or a table and then find that they are shuffling past it all to get in an out.

What you need to do is decide how you are going to use the room, and what funiture and layout you want, and then what space you want between it all. Then add 50%.

get some marker paint or some bamboo canes and mark out sizes. then mark the door and then try to fit in furniture
