How close can a rad be to a boiler?

We've had a new Valliant combi installed and are very happy with it.

We messed up though because we have a small downstairs loo right next to the boiler and didn't get a rad fitted. It's now really cold in there!

The easiest was to T-off the flow and return (22mm) will by about 30cm away from where they leave/return the boiler. Will this be OK? We already have a small rad about 2metres away from the boiler and I remember the plumber saying he was concerned it would steal all the heat.

Also I know that I can't use push fit fittings this close to the boiler but could I use compression?

Worst case I'll put an electric heater in there.

Can't see a problem but make sure you balance your system. The valves will only need to be open slightly at that distance from the boiler.

One last question.

When I cut the 22mm flow and returns to put my compression T-piece in how much do I have to cut away? Or is it a case of trial and error?

just measure the gap between the 2 branches that the fitting goes in. ususall around the 22mm size as thats the width of the branch. be aware also that without any pipe movement you'll need a 22mm slip fitting. you can buy these as end feed or witha 'rat tail' file you can hollow out a 22mm comp fitting. juts be sure to bite one nut and olive in place 1st as your marker.

Whats a 'slip fitting'?

a slip fitting is like a normal coupling but without the ridge in the middle that stops it slipping right along the pipe. this is usfull in your situation whereby if you cut the pipe for the t and cant cet the pipes to move apart. you can then make another cut s 6 inches along take the whole section out, put in the t and use the slip to cover the other cut.

find another plumber, this one is clueless.

provided the boiler is big enough to carry all the rads, pipes adequate for the flow and you comply with the regs, you can stick a rad anywhere you want irrespective of any other rad
