How do i go about making an arch?

Evening Gents,
At the moment my front room and dining room are all in one, what i'm planning to do is make an arch to divide them both. would i be better off by blocking up and putting a beam up or would i be better off making a wooden frame? If so how do i go about carrying out this work?
