J Bonding, HELP

JB, Remember me ? Mick the guy who is building his own small extension ?

Well i have finally finished the roof :P :P :P and i have come to a stop again, i was hoping to give the blockwork the scratch coat this weekend BUT what do i do when i come to the catnic lintel over the door ?

Surely you cant render a steel lintel ? or should i have done something else whilst i was instaling it

Gis a clue , go on you know you want to :)

Cheers,

Mick.

just adding a little snippet to j.b's reply, if you double up on the e.m.l, slightly off setting one layer against the next, then the backing plaster will grip that mutch better.

All these little tricks we take for granted  with sand and cement this is a great idea because its nothing like any gypsum plasters and a lot will fall through.

Cheers guys,

I have seen rust popping out of some render especially on the corners?

is this caused by the lathing rusting and will i get this eventually ?

This is caused by some knobhead trying to save 10p on beads and buying internal float beads instead of galvanised or plastic beads personally i prefer galvanised they dont bend as much.

Cheers JB,

PS tried my first plastering job with browning last week... found it REALLY difficult ? never have a problem when i render or use bonding..

probably just me

you should always apply browning in two coats. the scratch coat helps with initial suction, so that when you apply the float coat, it will rule off so much easier. the trick is not to leave it too long between coats, or youll be back to square one.

Ah i se. 2 coats...

I always thought bonding was for low suction ? so what would i use in my newly built thermalite extension interior ? And dont say dry line... not a fan of it. Much prefare proper plaster.

Mick

"float and set" is for pros only. the tricks of the trade in managing this type of plastering, can only be learned by time served spreads. there are so many variables for a novice to learn, and with your home interior at stake, wouldn't it be better to hire a "two and one" spread gang?

Cheers Guys,

Think i will try Bonding then for the thermalite. Will that do the job OK jb ?

Cheers
