What tools & technique do i need in order to remove the left over carpet from the back of my stair tread?

We wish to paint the stairs and i have ripped, scraped the virtually all.. But the parts on the back of the stairs are a nightmare as they have been nailed/stapled down

Is it also been glued?
I ask because if it's only nailer/stapled, you could put a flat screwdriver on one end and lift it, then forcibly pull the carpet strip free.
All nails/staples will then be exposed for removal

Not saying that these will work 100% but they are designed to grip canvas for stretching.
Rather than trying to remove all the carpet by had along the length it mat be better to use a screwdriver/tack remover to remove 1/4 or 1/3 from one side and then grab what is released and yank the remainder, this should partly pull any remaining nails/staples out

I do not think that it has been glued down. However if it has, is there a decent method of lifting the carpet..

Thanks for the help guys..
